This workshop is a combination of bookbinding and idea generation. We begin with learning and preparing the basic parts of a sketchbook, as well as discussing the importance of keeping a sketchbook. Then, as we begin to bind the text block, we will do several content-based exercises to “get those creative juices flowing.” At the end of the workshop, students will leave with a handmade sketchbook and new ideas to take back to their workspace and turn into masterpieces. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts partner Robyn Raines will lead the workshop as part of our ongoing collaboration with VMFA.
NOTE: Ages 11 and up, 16 and under should have an adult present. Lunch is on participants. You are welcome to visit Claire’s, Bacova Beer Company, or bring your own lunch from home.

Robyn Raines
A southwest Virginia native, Robyn moved back to the region after completing her BFA in textile design from Moore College of Art & Design (Philadelphia); working for Betsey Johnson, a New York-based fashion designer; and completing the Core Fellow Program at the Penland School of Crafts (NC). In 2017, she completed her master's degree in natural resources from Virginia Tech's Center for Leadership in Global Sustainability. Robyn followed a path of full-time leadership roles in both the art and human service non-profit sector, until 2020 when she decided to refocus. She owns Whitetop Yoga in Abingdon, Virginia, where she is excited to support gratitude, mindfulness, and intention with the local community and visitors to the region. She loves balancing her space and time between her yoga and art studios, as well as farming and traveling.
